Wocka, wocka, wocka, David Lloyd.

Set-up, joke.  Set-up, joke.  Try to be funny on the page.  Wocka, wocka, wocka.  It’s hard, damn hard.  For anyone trying to write any version of comedy–feature, half-hour, a humorous blog post–it’s harder than you always think it’s going to be, unless you’re a genius, which almost no is.  (Jim Henson, who used to throw penguins in the air to get out of sketches?)  It’s almost impossible to write one truly great script, one truly great joke…  from my vantage point, it seems a miracle to get one show on the air, to get one feature made.

Which is why it always amazes me when someone has a long, remarkable career!

Remember when NBC didn’t just throw the mediocre Jay Leno up there?  Sure, they still have ’30 Rock’ and ‘The Office,’ but this was the home to ‘Cheers’ and ‘Frasier,’ two shows that make you want to try.  And someone unknown (to anyone outside of the business) writer wrote for both of those shows, as well as ‘Mary Tyler Moore’ and ‘Taxi’ and ‘The Bob Newhart Show’.

So, a serious post for a funny guy.  The Times obit is here: http://www.nytimes.com/2009/11/13/arts/television/13lloyd.html?_r=1&scp=1&sq=David%20Lloyd&st=cse

and it’s worth podcasting Rob Long’s “Martini Shot” on him.  But really, toss a ‘Cheers’ rerun on the Tivo.  Cheers, Mr. Lloyd!
