“And Let Us Turn Our Thoughts Today To Martin Luther King”

Do you know the song Shed A Little Light, by the estimable James Taylor?  I first became aware of it when Aimee Mann covered it in the season four “West Wing” episode College Kids (she performs it at a ‘Rock the Vote’ event (it’s here) and it’s the one where C.J. says one of the most true statements ever: “Decisions are made by those who show up.”  If you haven’t seen this episode, please, go now.  But we digress, that’s what this blog does.).

Anyway, there’s Golden Globes awards and J-E-T-S wins and movie reviews.  But, let us turn our thoughts today to Martin Luther King.  It’s not just about civil rights, and it’s not just about race–  it’s about the government fighting poverty and people donating to Haiti and food banks even in times of trouble, and protesting against a war at a time when he was, we forget, very unpopular, and, as in the episode College Kids, paying for kids to go to college.  It’s about what we can do.  In the words of President Obama, it’s about “… a king who took us to the mountaintop.”

Thank you.

Let us turn our thoughts today to Martin Luther King

And recognize that there are ties between us

All men and women living on the Earth

ties of hope and love  sister and brotherhood

that we are bound together in our desire to see the world become

A place in which our children can grow free and strong

We are bound together by the task that stands before us

And the road that lies ahead
